Dakota Blue Richards is the English actress who was chosen to play Lyra Belacqua in the upcoming feature film His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass. Ten thousand girls turned up for open auditions in Cambridge, Oxford, Exeter and Kendal for the role of Lyra Belacqua. In June 2006, 12-year-old Dakota, a Londoner schoolgirl, was awarded the part after the casting directors took a shine to her in the Cambridge auditions. A fan of the books herself, Dakota has also seen the stage version at the National Theatre.
During the Promotion of the film all throughout the end of 2007 and beginning of 2008, Dakota’s talent was recognized more and more. Which lead to her starring in her next role as Maria Merryweather in the feature film The Secret of Moonacre. This sorry originated from a book called The little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge. During the Filming of this movie Dakota mentioned she had a lot of trouble with her old time costumes saying, “They looked great, but they felt horrible. Every dress that I wore I was laced into, and there were loads of different layers, and lots of bustles. The way that bustles do up is they have one tight around the waist, one around your hips and one just above your knees. So you can’t really move your legs very well. That’s why all the old fashioned people used to walk like penguins.”
Dakota next went to film another book to movie adaptation called Dustbin Baby . This film was so far the most different Dakota has played. In this movie there is no magic, or flying witches, or moon princesses. This movie is more realistic than her others, and frankly it is quite sad. It tells the story of April who was dumped in a Dustbin(trash can) right after birth. The movie is a great showcase of Dakota’s never ending talent and was released in 2008.
Most recently released is a short film called Five Miles Out. Dakota played main character Cass who was sent to her cousins house for a vacation while her sister is in the hospital. On this vacation she meets a boy who is on a secret mission, and is determined to figure out what he is up to. This was just a short film however it showcased one of Dakota's best acting talents.
Next year Dakota will be in another short film called Rain where she plays a girl named Heidi. Filming for this role began earlier this year, and will continue over the summer after Dakota's exams.
